Roberto Goyeneche in memorian Standard Chess

If we had to choose a character who synthetizes the last thirty years of tango, undoubtedly the name of Polaco Goyeneche would come out. Not only for his extraordinary quality as singer, but and especially, for his being the archetype of the late brood of our city lineage and Bohemian life.

The expressiveness of his phrasing, the peculiar way of placing the voice, the strong personality of the one who knows the very essence of tango, make him different from all the other singers of our time.

His handling of accents and silence, the delay of some word of the lyrics, or the intimate whisper of a line, make him a unique vocalist, impossibly mistaken for somebody else.

His diction was perfect, even in the late years of his life when the decline of his voice, instead of harming his popularity, raised him to the category of living myth.

With time he achieved such perfection, that he would take the liberty of beginning a phrase off-beat —liltingly— to later reach the last notes at the end of the bar.

He was great among the greats, and holding Gardel´s hand and those of his brothers Corsini, Charlo, Fiorentino and Vargas, his voice, his garganta con arena (throat with sand), will go on giving pleasure with the tango taste and the daily perfume of Buenos Aires nights.


Si tuviéramos que elegir un personaje síntesis de los últimos treinta años del tango, sin ninguna duda surgiría el nombre del Polaco Goyeneche. No sólo por tratarse de un cantor extraordinario, sino y fundamentalmente, por ser el arquetipo de la última camada de nuestra estirpe y bohemia porteña.

La expresividad de su fraseo, el particular modo de colocar la voz, la fuerte personalidad del que conoce la esencia misma del tango, lo distinguen de todos los otros cantores de nuestro tiempo.

El manejo de los acentos y los silencios, el arrastre de alguna palabra de la letra, o el susurro intimista de un verso, lo convierten en un vocalista irrepetible, imposible de ser confundido con otro.

Su dicción era perfecta, aún en los últimos años de su vida cuando la decadencia de su voz, lejos de mellar su popularidad lo elevó a la categoría de mito viviente.

Con el tiempo logra tal perfección, que se permitiría el lujo de iniciar una frase a destiempo —cadenciosamente— para luego alcanzar las últimas notas al final del compás.

Fue grande entre los grandes, y de la mano de Gardel y de sus hermanos Corsini, Charlo, Fiorentino y Vargas, su voz, su garganta con arena, nos seguirá deleitando con el sabor del tango y el perfume cotidiano de las noches de Buenos Aires.
